Javon Kinlaw was Right

Local and national media outlets covering sports mean less than ever. That’s just the truth. With social media exploding in the last decade, athletes can speak out against or even go at reporters more than ever if said reporters put out false reports.

However, we haven’t seen quite a beef between media and player like the beef between Javon Kinlaw and Grant Cohn. There was an alleged confrontation on the field during practice.

If you’re not familiar with either individual here’s a quick resume check on both. Kinlaw was drafted No. 14 overall in the 2020 draft to the San Francisco 49ers and has played in 18 games over the last two seasons. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL during the 2021 season which limited him to only four games.

Cohn, on the other hand, has covered the 49ers for the team’s FanNation blog of Sports Illustrated since 2011. That’s about it.

First of all, round of applause goes to Kinlaw for these high-quality chirps:

  • “My nuts bigger than yours put some respect on my name”

  • “Voice lighter than my f***king baby”

  • “All I know is when I walked up on you your f***king body temperature was cold as f***king ice”

Second, as a journalism student, it’s been pounded in my brain that both sides of a story need to be told, both good and bad and in sports, that’s no different. Sports writers have to critique what the team did right and what the team did wrong.

Kinlaw isn't the only 49er that has a problem with Cohn.

Cohn just seems to be that one negative friend that turns every glimmer of hope into a negative. Just look at his takeaway articles from Week 1 of OTAs.

Here are the quotes I specifically want to hit on if you don’t want to read it, which I wouldn’t blame you.

  • On Brock Purdy INT: “it was a vintage Jimmy Garappolo interception. Maybe that’s why the 49ers drafted him.”

  • On safety George Odum: “Now we see why the Colts rarely played Odum in their defense, relegated him to special teams and elected not to resign him.”

Again this is the FIRST WEEK of OTAs and Cohn is already predicting the depth chart because the Cohn master knows all.

In this situation, Cohn just comes across as a spoiled brat that hates “working” when there are millions of fans around the WORLD would KILL to just write about sports for a living, let alone get a credential to be around the team.

Just treat other humans with respect, or just trash humans that you know you can take in a fight.
